I am not ashamed to tell you that I believe in therapy. I believe in the therapy that good friends provide. I believe in the therapy that loving family members provide. I believe in the therapy that God-loving competent professionals provide. But above all I believe in the therapy that Holy Spirit provides.
Once upon a time I was in a very dark place. It was a maze, and I exaggerate not when I tell you that it was so dark that after trying to find my way out I eventually saw no sense in bothering to open my eyes. The maze would have been hard enough to navigate had there been light but without any I was doomed to languish in that horrible place. But God, who loves to rescue the lost, gave a woman named Pam, who was full of His Spirit, a blazing torch and said, “Go into that maze and tell my daughter that she has already been found. Help her navigate her way to Me. Tell her that My love and deliverance are here and that she is not alone.” And although it took some time for my eyes to adjust to the light, I finally began to see some shadows. Then one day I was heartbroken because Pam moved on, but before she did God took the torch out of her hand and handed it to another incredibly wise godly woman and told her to help me the rest of the way. I got out of that dark maze and I celebrate those women for their commitment to their calling and their obedience to God. I keep their love, kindness and words of wisdom in my heart. I am forever grateful to them for what they have and continue to sow into my life. But I am even more grateful to my God, my Abba, for intentionally sending them my way.
I hope this doesn’t sound like a public service announcement because I am saying this with great sincerity. Don’t suffer in darkness or confusion. That’s where the enemy wants you. Allow a God-filled counselor to help you navigate your way to safety. Your freedom will be a great blow to the enemy of your soul. You can’t step into the fullness of God’s plan for your life without that freedom. No matter what any well-meaning people tell you, don’t be ashamed to get the help you need. God will be glorified in your courage and in your confidence in Him. And being a reflection of the glory of God is our ultimate endgame.
